Hypebeerst: The Pumpkin Beer Summoning
Dogfish Head Brewing Punkin Ale
Dogfish Head Punkin Ale is actually the first pumpkin beer I ever tried, thus the bar as well as my future expectations were set pretty damn high. It’s a reasonably heavy ale, weighing in at 7% ABV, and you can taste the weight as Punkin has a little bit of an alcoholic burn both in your mouth and in your throat. I honestly think this beer is a pretty good candidate for aging just a little bit because of that burn when tried fresh. With Dogfish using a brown ale as the base, you get a tasty malty backbone with a bit heavier carbonation which gives this pumpkin beer its trademark thickness. It’s more of a sweet spice bomb than almost all of the others I’ve picked out, making up for the lack of actual pumpkin flavor with cinnamon, nutmeg and alllspice notes. Worth trying, it was my Thanksgiving dinner accoutrement last year along with Backwoods Bastard.
