The Perfect Black and Tan: A Perfect Tool For Your Drinking Arsenal

The Perfect Black and Tan: A Perfect Tool For Your Drinking Arsenal

Q: It looks as though there’s a science to this whole layering thing. Can you give us some tips on choosing which beers to layer and how to get them to separate so well?
A: There definitely is a science to it that I’m only just beginning to understand. During the product’s development I was concerned about minimizing the volume and speed of the liquid flow to limit the mixing of the layers as much as possible.  Experimenting with different beer layering combinations has given me some rules of thumb.  They are:

  • Generally, stouts and black lagers work well as dark top layers
  • Generally, porters work well as dark bottom layers
  • When the top layer beer quickly mixes into the bottom layer, try again but reverse the layers

Some of my rules say ‘generally’ because I’ve found a wheat beer that layers under a porter and a lite beer that layers over Guinness draft.  I was very surprised with these, especially the lite beer over Guinness; that blew my mind.

Q: What and where was your first beer?
A: I think my first beer was a Labatt Blue ale.  Coming from Canada you are either a Labatt’s Blue or a Molson Canadian drinker.  After trying the Blue for my first beer, I immediately switched to Molson Canadian.

Q: What are some great brews that are in your beer cellar right now?
A: When a beer is in my fridge it is the best brew in the world.  Right now my collection includes Franconia Wheat, Murphy’s Draft, Shiner White Wing and Goose Island 312.

Q: What’s your favorite style? Your favorite beer?
A: Currently my taste goes with wheat beers and stouts.  My general favorite is Guinness Draft.

Q: What are a few of your White Whales? Anything you’ve been hunting for that you’ve tried recently?
A: No recently found white whales.  However, I find going to a well stocked beer store overwhelming. Too many great choices!  Often I make my wife pick up my beer and surprise me. 😉

Q: +1 for the wife handling beer duties! You’ve got a keeper, especially if she knows brew but won’t empty your fridge. Where can people find your product? How can they get in touch with you?
A: My product can be found at www.blackandtanbeer.com and Amazon. I can be reached through email at support@theperfectblackandtan.comand am glad to answer any layered beer questions that people may have.

Q: Anything you want to say to our audience?
A: If you’re bored with your beer, try layering.

I’m definitely going to cosign trying layering. It can make you enjoy some old favorites in completely new ways! Think of how empty your life as a child would have been without peanut butter AND jelly; combining doesn’t alter the favors but it challenges your palate in new and exciting ways.
