Kooky for Hankook Taqueria
The old saying “Looks can be deceiving” rings true whenever I think about Hankook Taqueria. When I was dragged here by my co-worker one day, I never thought I’d be anxious to make my next visit. Just like my favorite Jamaican spot off of Edgewood, Hankook has a very special place in my heart.
Well-seasoned Executive Chef, Tomas Lee, is no stranger to the Atlanta food scene. With over a decade of working for Atlanta’s top restaurant group (Buckhead Life), Lee was eager to incorporate his own Korean-American heritage into something tasty for his strong following. Enter Hankook Taqueria. A simple concept combining traditional Korean meats and spices with the ease of Mexican styling. Who can say no to a taco?
The menu is straightforward and packed full of flavor! It’s always hard choosing what to order and although I’ve tried all his tacos, I tend to stick with beef. All tacos have lettuce, green onions, onions, cilantro and green cabbage tossed in soy sesame vinaigrette. Squeeze some of the lime wedge that comes on the side and you’re good to go. Your taste buds will be two seconds away from achieving nirvana, trust me.
Excuse the mid-action shot, but the taco was just that good! Many people rave about Lee’s Sesame Fries, a crispy street snack served with chipotle ketchup however, proceed with caution. It’s spicy! For those of you who prefer something a bit mild, go with the Ko-Kuma (tempura fried Korean sweet potatoes with sweet chili aioli). Prior to this food adventure, I had never heard of Korean sweet potatoes, but damn are they good! Blame it on the crispy tempura batter…they are the perfect pairing with their classic tacos.
