With that out of the way, this brew is a VERY polarizing pumpkin beer in the craft beer community. Some people love it, others absolutely despise it. I’m one of the former; it’s a favorite of mine and I look forward to buying a bottle every single opportunity I have available. It’s a high ABV beer that gets you buzzed and tastes so fvcking balanced. The alcoholic burn is noticeable when fresh but instead of the burn being a detractor like in Dogfish Head’s Punkin Ale, this burn helps to break up the sweetness of Pumking and reminds you that you’re drinking beer, not some bottled confection. It’s beer dammit!
If you want to cut down on the burn and don’t have a year to age your bottle, try layering Pumking with a sweet or milk stout. Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout, Lefthand Brewing’s Milk Stout and Southern Tier’s Creme Brulee or Choklat Stout are all great choices. For the heavier drinkers, barrel aged stouts take Pumking to another level. I go with New Holland Brewing Dragon’s Milk.
