Texas is known for cowboys and barbeque. Texans take pride in their barbequing skills. Learning to properly barbeque is a rite of passage for Texans. Nestled in DeSoto, TX Kendon Greene followed his passion and started Top 5 BBQ. Kendon, a former fisherman with a theology degree was challenged by his wife to learn how to barbeque. He accepted the challenge and started selling barbeque out of a portable trailer. After a few months, it was time to expand. Since the expansion of Top 5 BBQ, Jay Z, Beyonce and DJ Khaled are a few of the celebrities that visit the restaurant when they are in Dallas/Ft. Worth. When you walk into Top 5 BBQ everyone is treated like a celebrity.
The first thing I noticed when I entered Top 5 BBQ was the warm welcome that I received. It is obvious that customer service is a priority. The smell of BBQ meets you at the door, it is a heavenly smell that brings joy to the heart of a foodie.
The newest menu item at Top 5 BBQ is called, “Caught in the Pickle” The “Caught in the Pickle” had me at hello. It is a sandwich, but not just any sandwich. The bread is toasted, the “Caught in the Pick” has many layers. The bottom layer is smoked brisket. The brisket is perfectly seasoned and tender. Pulled pork is placed on top of the brisket. The meat is then drizzled with a homemade cheese sauce. The sandwich is topped with fried pickles and fried onion rings. It is the best barbeque sandwich I ever tasted. Each item is correctly proportioned. There is balance and structure to the “Caught in the Pickle” It was too big to bite, it’s a knife and for sandwich.
The menu at Top 5 consists of homemade tortilla chips, brisket, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and street tacos. Their creamed corn is perfection. The creamed corn is finished with shredded cheese on top. It is not your grandmother’s creamed corn, but Top 5’s twist on a Sunday dinner favorite. Top 5 BBQ has mastered the concept of good customer service and good food. Tasty meat and creative dishes is the key to Top 5’s success.
